Spotlight on Chicago’s Private Schools

Chicago School Supply recognizes that private schools often find it a challenge to effectively educate community members and prospective families on what their particular school has to offer. With that in mind, Chicago School Supply is excited to feature some of these unique private schools in our new blog feature Spotlight on Chicago’s Private Schools.

 Situated in the neighborhood of South Chicago St. Michael Elementary School, is a community of learners where quality education is provided within the context of Christian living. With the tradition of Catholic education as the foundation for our existence, we promote academic excellence and the Gospel values of justice and peace. The families and staff members of St. Michael School take pride in the rich diversity of culture, language, and ethnic origin, which encourages a global concern for all peoples on earth.   

Q.  What are the basic demographics of your school?

A.  We have families who are originally from Mexico, Poland, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ireland, Haiti, Puerto Rico, and various West African Countries.

Q.  What is unique about your curriculum? 

A.  One of the many things we pride ourselves on is the innovative technology that we integrate into our curriculum.  Each classroom is equipped with a computer station and interactive white board. 

Q.  What degrees are held by the staff?

A. Most of our teachers have master’s degrees, and all are certified and have their bachelor’s degrees.

Q.  What is the teacher/student ratio? 

A. About 1:15

Q.  What is the typical schedule of the school day?

A. 7:45 am – 2:45 pm

Q.  What opportunities are there for Parent Involvement? 

A.  Math Game Night; Volunteering on Field Trips and at Fundraisers; Weekly School Masses and Sunday Masses

Q.  How long has the school been in operation?

A.  The parish was founded in 1898, the church was dedicated in 1909, and the school opened shortly thereafter.

Q.  What type of activities are offered to the students?

A.  Intramural Sports, French and Spanish lessons, piano and violin lessons, student council, board game club, open liabrary, dance, phoenics class, tutoring, and handbell choir.

Q.  What is the tuition, and how is it paid? 

A.  $4200 per year; paid monthly

Q.  Is it possible to schedule a tour and meet some of the staff and parents?

A.  Parents that are interested in enrolling their children in St. Michael’s should visit the school between 8 a.m-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and Mrs. De La Pena or Mrs. Sandoval will be happy to answer any questions and/or give you a tour of the school.

Q.  What is the best way to receive enrollment and tuition information?

A.  2011-2012 enrollment has begun and prospective parents can call our school office for more information.

Q. Are there any summer programs offered?

A. We partner with Corazon a Corazon, which is located at 8235 S. South Shore Drive, for our summer program. The program involves academics and enrichment activities.

Additional information: Extended care opens at 7:00 a.m. and closes at 6:00 p.m. to offer flexibility to working parents.  Breakfast and hot lunch program is also offered.  The school is two blocks from the Metra Station, thus providing a convenient location for parents who travel into the city for employment.
