Chicago School Supply recognizes that private schools often find it a challenge to educate effectively community members and prospective families on what their particular school has to offer. With that in mind, Chicago School Supply is excited to feature some of these unique private schools in our new blog feature Spotlight on Chicago’s Private Schools.
This week we are proud to partner with Salem Christian School, a Ministry of New Life Covenant Church. Founded in 1973, Salem Christian School, is an urban Pre-K thru 8th grade school located in the Humboldt Park/Logan Square communities of Chicago. Recently we sat down with Principal Cindi DiIorio to learn more about what makes Salem Christian School unique.
Q. Cindy, what are some of the basic demographics of Salem Christian School?
A. We have 180 students of diverse backgrounds
Q. What is the philosophy (theology) of the school?
A. Evangelical Christian
Q. What is unique about your curriculum?
A. Our test scores indicate we are above the state standards and our curriculum benchmarks are set at national levels. The social studies curriculum is non-textbook based and draws from a variety of resources, including exploration via the internet. Our students study a full grade above in math. All grade levels have daily bible study and weekly chapel on Wednesdays.
Q. What degrees are held by the staff?
A. All our full-time faculty members hold a bachelor’s degree in education and some also hold a master’s degree.
Q. What is the teacher/student ratio?
Q. What is the typical schedule of the school day?
A. School hours are from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Our students participate in Physical Education 3-5 times per week as well as Spanish, art, and music once weekly. We also offer after-care as early as 6:00 a.m. and as late as 6:00 p.m. for our families that need that extra flexibility in their day.
Q. What opportunities are there for Parent Involvement?
A. We encourage parental involvement in the school and parents can participate in our Parent/Teacher Fellowship. There are also various classroom volunteer opportunities for each grade level.
Q. How long has the school been in operation?
A. 38 years
Q. What type of activities are offered to the students?
A. Dance, Basketball, music, and art. There is also our After School Adventures program that offers small-group or individual classes in piano, guitar, drums, art, book club, volleyball, and Spanish.
Q. What is the tuition, and how is it paid?
A. For one child tuition is $4000.00, second child is $3000.00, third child is $1100.00 and each additional child is $850. 00. We offer installment payment options for our families over a ten month period beginning in August, however a 5% discount is offered to those who pay in full by July 15. Tuition includes books and yearbooks.
Q. Is it possible to schedule a tour and meet some of the staff and parents?
A. Absolutely! We offer private tours as well as shadow days for the prospective students. We also host both a fall and spring open house each year.
