Free Parent Involvement Activity - "Love, Dad" - Grades K-3rd

Comprehension
Children find it thrilling to receive a special note from Dad (or Mom). Write a short letter to your child and put it somewhere where she will find it (on her pillow, taped to the bathroom mirror, in her lunch box, etc.). It can be a very simple note, such as, "Dear Katie, I hope you have a wonderful day today. I'll be thinking about you. Shall we play cards tonight? Love, Dad." Even though new readers may need you to interpret the notes, they will still enjoy them just as much.

Periodic letters add up to meaningful and treasured memories for your child, whether they are received every morning or just when Mom or Dad goes on a business trip.

Free Parent Involvement Activity - "Anticipation Games" - 3-12 Months

Listening Skills, Language Skills, Memory Skills

Anticipation Actions: Babies enjoy and quickly learn to anticipate certain actions when you are playing with them. Tell your child what you are about to do, and then do it. "I'm going to kiss your nose!" "I'm going to kiss your foot!" etc. Soon she will eagerly anticipate the kiss. You can also pretend that you are about to sneeze and then bury your face in her tummy and the final "Achoo!"

Anticipation Rhymes: Certain rhymes lend themselves to a playful and much anticipated action. "Pop Goes the Weasel" calls for a gentle bounce on your knee. For "This Little Piggy Went to Market," you can run your fingers up your baby for the last little piggy who says, "Wee, wee, wee all the way home." Try making up your own silly rhymes!

2. I am on the East Coast of the United States.

3. I am part of the United States, but I am not a state.

4. You can visit the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial here.

Free Parent Involvement Activity - "Comic Strips & Books" - Grades 1-3

Creativity, Story and Character Development, Layout

Look at the comic strips in your newspaper with your child and talk about how the characters words and thoughts appear in bubbles (called "saycons"), how the view of the action changes from panel to panel, and how sometimes the meaning or action is conveyed with only an illustration. (If you have a comic book available, go through it with your child and discuss its format.) Point out how some comic strips have a style that looks very realistic, and others have a looser cartoon-like feel.

Some comics feature people, some feature animals that talk, and some feature both.

Encourage your child to create his own humorous panel comic strip or comic book. For inspiration, help him to remember a funny situation (or just get him to think about what makes him laugh, in general). If he has a hard time coming up with comic strip/book ideas, you can just have fun illustrating various selections from a book of jokes (available at your local library).

Free Parent Involvement Activity - "Color Flip" - Grades K-1st

Counting

Glue green and yellow construction paper together, back to back. After the glue has dried, cut the paper into sixteen similarly sized cards. They will be yellow on one side and green on the other.

Take these and lay eight green cards and eight yellow cards face up between you and your child. Let your child choose which color she would like to play with during the game.

To play the game, you and your child take turns throwing a die. The number on the die will determine how many of your opponent's cards you will be able to "flip over" to your color. For example, if your child rolls a two, she will turn over two of your green cards so they are yellow (her color).

A player wins when she succeeds in rolling the exact number necessary to allow her to flip over the last of her opponent's cards.

If at all possible, attend a concert featuring this composer, or attend an exhibit featuring the artist's work and ask your child for his opinions. What does he think the artist is trying to express with each piece? Does the artwork seem to be telling a story? Consider letting your child create a piece of artwork using the featured artist's typical medium (oil paints, watercolors, clay, etc.).

Exploring the works of various artists and talking about their differeing styles, choice of subjects, etc., can yhelp your child develop an understanding of how art takes many forms and how it changes over time.

Free Parent Involvement Activity - "Captions" - Grades K-3rd

Creative Writing, Composition, Handwriting

Help your child cut out interesting photos from newspapers or magazines, and glue them onto pieces of construction paper. Encourage her to provide appropriate (or just plain silly) captions for them. If your child isn't old enough to write yet, simply have her dictate captions to you.

Another fun place for captions is the family photo album. Let your child think up captions for a roll of photos you have just had developed or have her write captions on strips of paper and tape them under pictures in the family album. For extra fun, let her create and tape word and thought bubbles above peoples' heads in the photos.

Free Parent Involvement Activity - "Coin Flip Stats" - Grades K-3rd

Statistics, Probability, Graphing

Create a 3 x 10 grid, as shown, and label the columns "heads/heads," "tails/tails," and "heads/tails."

You and your child each flip a coin, and then let your child color a square of the grid according to the results of the coin toss. for example, if both of your coins come up "heads," she will color a square at the bottom of the "heads/heads" column. If one of you flips heads and the other tails, she will fill in a square starting at the bottom of the "heads/tails" column.

Continue tossing coins until one of the columns is full. You and your child will find that the "heads/tails" column is most likely to fill up first. the probability of heads/tails coming up is greater because the combination can occur as either heads/tails or tails/heads.

Variation -- Weight the heads side on one (or b0th) coins with a bit of clay. Continue tossing the coins and see if (and how) that skews the results.

Free Parent Involvement Activity - "Categories" - Ages 7+

What is a lepidopterist?

Think of a general category and suggest to your child that she try to think of things that fit the category. Some possible categories to explore might be flowers, birds, farm animals, things you find at the beach, unusual names, etc. Take turns choosing the categories and naming the items that go into each of them. To make it a bit more challenging, you can try to only name items for a given category that start with a specific letter. For example, if your category is "Sports" and you choose "S" as your letter, some possible entries might include the following: soccer, swimming, sky diving, snorkeling, skiing, etc.

You can also encourage your child to write down a certain number of words that fit the category or as many items as she can think of within a certain time frame. If she is playing with others, they can all write down as many items as possible individually (bonus points can be awarded for items that are not on the other players' lists).

Create a four-column grid on a piece of cardboard or poster board. Label the tops of the columns,

"Pennies," "Nickels," "Dimes," and "Quarters." In the sections of the grid below each heading, write the current year and each progressively earlier year until you have the ten most recent years written in each column.

Now help your child look for coins throughout the house, and tape or glue the appropriate ones onto their proper spots on the board. Finding all forty coins might take a while, but a lot of the fun is in keeping an eye out for the missing years.

Expressing Ideas, Critical Thinking, Persuasion Skills, Sentence Structure

Debate Team -- Ask your child for input as you select a topic of debate (speedboat vs. sailboat, cat vs. dog, pancakes vs. waffles, etc.) and let him choose which side of the "debate" he wants to take.

You and your child will each write down five points that support your individual position and then compare them. Talk about the relative merits of the written statements and decide whether or not either of you was able to sway the other's opinion.

Some examples of arguments to use in a debate about speedboats vs. sailboats might include the following: "Seppedboats go fast." "Sailboats are quiet and peaceful." "Speedboats can pull a water skier." "Sailboats don't pollute."

Braggart -- In this game you and your child take turns one-upping each other with more and more far-fetching claims (going father, higher, faster, etc.)

You can begin by writing a statement such as, "I rode my bike to the middle of downtown!" Your child can counter with, "I rode my bike to Montana!" You might then boast, "I rode my bike across the Atlantic Ocean and back!" etc. Before long, one of you will be claiming to have ridden your bike around the universe while standing on your head with your eyes closed!
